The 3D printer uses PLA (Polylactic Acid) filament. PLA is a biodegradable polymer derived from renewable resources, such as corn starch, and does not produce UFCs (Ultrafine Particles).

The 3D printers at Gerstein + MADLab use PLA (polyactic acid), a biodegradeable thermoplastic aliphatic polyester dervied from corn starch. It's safe to use in our space.

What materials are used? The Library’s 3D printer uses a plastic made from corn starch called Polylactic Acid or PLA for short. Because PLA is plant based, it will biodegrade over time when exposed to continuous moisture. You can view available colors on our display swatch ring.

Pancakes to prosthetics: 3-D printing the future at Ithaca College (article)
Roger's lab is home to three unique 3-D printers, from the $300 PancakeBot that works strictly in the batter medium, up to the $3,000 MakerBot which prints using a plastic-like substance made from corn starch.

What kind of plastic do the printers use?
All of the printers use PLA (polylactide) filament, a biodegradable material derived from corn starch.

These 3D-Printing Spider Robots Could Be The Future Of Construction (article)
These 3D-printing robots – known as SiSpis or Siemens Spiders – have been designed by Siemens researchers at their lab in Princeton, New Jersey. They’re equipped with cameras and laser scanners to understand their surroundings. They then scuttle around, printing layers of a plastic-like substance made from cornstarch and sugarcane, much like the mechanism of a conventional 3D printer but with much more precision and flexibility.

Review of Materials that Can Be 3D Printed at Home (article)
Polylactic acid (PLA) is one of the most common filaments used by hobbyists within the 3D printing community today. It’s a class of environmentally friendly plastic and made of completely natural ingredients. It is a mix of corn starch and sugar cane derivates that meet food-grade and biodegradability standards.

Opinion:
It is my opinion that both making plastics, and handling products made from 3D printers can be dangerous for the corn allergic. The fact that 3D Printers are being used in public libraries where people typically will not be aware of the danger to corn allergic is I believe particularly potentially dangerous.
